What Prophecy is:
Prophecy is getting a message from God and then delivering that message. It can be fore-telling the future or forth-telling of a current message that God directs you to deliver. The message will be to a specific person or to group of people.
When done in church or in the context of a believer’s meeting, it is generally forth-telling; a message of edification, exhortation and comfort from God toward his people. Although prophecy is usually spoken, it may also be delivered in writing, or it may be given another way, such as sign language. Whatever accurately conveys the message.
What Prophecy is For:
“But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.” (1 Cor. 14:3 KJV) The Manifestation of Prophecy is for building up your fellow brethren in Christ with support, strength and comfort.
Paul goes on to say in Verse 4: “He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.” That word there for “edifies” in Greek is “oikodomai” the verb form of the word oikodomen – actively building up on a solid foundation; meaning that it should be an ongoing thing, not just a one time occurrence.
Building people up. The word is oikodomen in the Greek, oiko means “house,” and domen means “to build.” So the direct translation is “house building”, to build a house on a solid foundation is the idea; and the work of prophesying then gives people a foundation. So this word is a powerful figure of speech in Greek that gives an expanded view of the greater meaning in one short word. Seems to lose a little in the English translation, doesn’t it? Like I’ve said before, the Word of God is very concise in its communication.
One of the major problems that Christians struggle with is their “old man” nature and their new true identity as a Son of God. Because they still get feelings of being what they once were, they believe those feelings, and they react accordingly. There is an up-and-down experience that they have a hard time getting away from. But prophesying corrects that. It teaches us who we are in Christ. That is why it is so needed in our day, as it was needed here in Corinth.
Prophecy, when done in church or among other believers is meant to build up and bless and strengthen those believers around you.
